Weekly Homework: Homework will change periodically between vocabulary, reading, and writing assignments. Below is a brief description of each type of assignment.
Article of the Week: Students will be given an article weeklythat they will be responsible for annotating, which is a close-reading skill that we will practice in class. In addition, students will need to complete a written paragraph that coincides to an open response question related to the article. The response should be well-written with ample textual evidence for support. Lastly, there will be 5 comprehension questions with each weekly article. This assignment will be assigned on Monday and should be turned in by Friday.
Vocabulary: Students will be given vocabulary words on Monday. They must complete 50 points on the Vocabulary Choice Board by Friday. Students will be given some time in class to do this assignment; however, it is the students responsibility to make sure it is completed by the due date.
Reading: Sometimes students will be expected to complete daily reading, along with 2-3 reading activities a week. Students have the flexibility to choose which activities they complete from the Reading Menu. All activities should be completed in their ELA notebook.
Writing: This assignment will allow students to practice their writing skills. When this assignment is assigned students must complete 2-3 writing activities on the Writing Choice Board by Friday.
Extra Credit Paper (ongoing assignment): Write a 1-page paper about a specific literary element (plot, character analysis, POV, conflict, mood, tone, bias, etc.) from a novel you read in class. Use the Notice and Note annotations as a way to develop your paper. For example, if you choose to write a paper about how the character overcame an internal conflict, you could use the notes from the Tough Questions or Aha Moment. a. Briefly describe the story element you have chosen and how it developed in the text. b. Then choose a specific Notice and Note category and explain how it developed the story element.
